Caregiver Outreach and Support Program

"There are only four kinds of people in the world:

  • Those who have been caregivers
  • Those who currently are caregivers
  • Those who will be caregivers
  • Those who will need caregivers"

Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter

Caregiver advocates are available to provide information about community services available to caregivers and the older persons for whom they care. This program is funded through a National Family Caregiver Support Program Grant.

Services

Caregiver Advocates can help caregivers identify community resources, select the best options and assist in securing needed services. They will:

  • Direct you to the appropriate agency or contact the agency on your behalf
  • Arrange home visits if you have intensive needs
  • Follow up to make sure that you have received the help you need
  • Provide limited supplemental services for caregivers in financial need

Senior Services Caregiver Outreach and Support Program is also available to do community outreach, education and coordination with service providers. Advocates are happy to schedule workplace or community presentations on:

  • Caregiver Resources
  • Long Distance Caregiving
  • Paying for Care
  • Legal Issues for Caregivers
  • Other Caregiving Concerns

The Kinship Care program helps kinship caregivers understand and navigate the services available for children living with relatives other than their own parents. Our goal is to strengthen families and to enhance the ability of relatives to provide a safe, stable and nurturing environment for the children in their care.

Eligibility

Services are available to:

  • Anyone caring for a person 60 or older
  • Any person 60 or older who is caring for a child under the age of 19.

The services are available at no cost to the public although donations are gladly accepted. However, many of the community resources we link people with do have specific age, income, asset or other eligibility criteria. Some are available at no cost; others have set fees or charge according to a person’s ability to pay. Contact a Caregiver Advocate for current information on program eligibility and or cost.

Community Resources

Senior Information and Assistance maintains a database of community based resources ranging from adult day care to legal services and transportation resources. Log on and search for resources available to caregivers and older persons in the Seattle and King County areas.

Consumer Information

Advocates have current information on over 7,000 community services. Senior Information and Assistance maintains a wide variety of consumer directories and resource lists. Each directory is designed for clarity and readability, and includes detailed resource information for seniors and their caregivers in the Seattle/King County area. Click on the Directories link to download and/or request documents.

Caregiver Journals

Another available source of support is our Online Journals where you can read daily accounts of the trials and tribulations as well as the successes and satisfaction of other caregivers. If you'd like to hear some of our experiences, family stories, share in things we've tried that worked and sympathize with the things that didn't work, feel free to share in our stories. Consider keeping a journal where you record all your feelings, hopes, dreams and disappointments. It is a good way to reduce stress and can be a cathartic tool, increasing creativity, enhancing your immune system, deepening your spiritual life, helping to generating insights. The letter that was never sent, the things better left unsaid, by setting them down in writing you can have a safe way of dealing with ideas and emotions that you may be afraid to express in any other manner. Journal writing can help with your immediate worries, and later, revisiting your writing can provide a window into how you once felt and how far you have come. There is no "right" or "wrong" way to do it ! Avail yourself of this powerful method for taking charge of your life. Use it to discover who you are and who you want to be. Email us to register for your own journal.

Caregiver Message Boards

Please feel free to visit the message boards and interact in real time with people that are going through the same things that you are. Through Caregiver Connection we hope to give you an avenue to a wonderful source of support, a private space where you can receive and provide support, encouragement, comfort, a reality check, knowledge, and compassion. Create a support group or build a network of friends. Participate in a venue where people meet for communicating their needs, wants, desires, experiences and feelings using their voice through letters, stories, poetry, quotations, email, etc. Help yourself as well as others navigate through the trenches of being caregiver.

Caregiving in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Families
Personal stories of caregiving shared by Lesbian, Gay and Transgender caregivers. Their stories of caring for parents, partners, friends and siblings highlight both the universal experiences of caregiving and the unique challenges faced by caregivers in the LGBT community. This 30 minute video was created for the NW LGBT Elder Conference held in June 2007. http://www.seattlechannel.org/videos/video.asp?ID=4146
