Project Apex research was
conducted between March 2007 and June 2007 by Senior Services staff in Seattle,
Washington. The research was split into two parts: a survey and three focus
groups. The target population was persons above the age of 34 who had a
bachelor’s degree or higher and who have volunteered in the last three years.
The survey was conducted with
questionnaires that were available on paper copies and via
the online service
SurveyMonkey.com. The
questionnaire consisted of 34 questions: 13 behavioral, 4
attitudinal, 10 demographic-related, and 7 personal information
and other. The questionnaires were distributed among volunteers
of various programs at Senior Services, including Meals on
Wheels, Senior Rights Assistance, the Statewide Health Insurance
Benefits Advisors, and Volunteer Transportation. They were also
sent to contacts at other community organizations through King
County, Washington and beyond. 314 responses were collected
total. Of that number, 226 responses were from persons who fit
within the target population. All mentions of the survey
"sample" on this website refer to the 226 respondents who fit
criteria making them part of our target population. All
recommendations that were formed from data gained through the
questionnaire come from the responses of the 226 member sample. All summaries of data gained from the
questionnaire report the responses of the target sample only.
All questionnaire respondents were
asked, “would you like to be part of a group discussion about
your volunteering experience and reasons for volunteering?” 87
members of the target sample said “yes.” Some were invited to
attend one of three focus group sessions. 19 persons
participated in focus groups. Each focus group was asked the
same set of
questions, which they received via mail
several days in advance.
