For the most part, respondents did
not feel that the volunteer work they enjoyed doing the most
required a person with their level of education. Person’s with
bachelor’s degrees were the most likely to identify their
favorite volunteer work as requiring their actual level of
education (26%). 19% of master’s degree holders and 17% of
Doctoral/professional degree holders did the same. In other
words, a large majority of respondents in each educational
attainment class felt that someone with less formal education
than themselves could do their favorite volunteer work. 52% of
bachelor’s degree holders, 34% of master’s degree holders, and
38% of those with doctoral or professional degrees felt that
someone with no college education could do the volunteer work
they found most enjoyable. In fact, no more than 63% of
respondents in any of the educational attainment categories felt
that a college degree was required to do their most enjoyable
volunteer position.
These responses are particularly
relevant for volunteer recruitment and coordination efforts.
Persons with college degrees might be more favorable toward
accepting a position that does not market itself as requiring a
college degree. Using the exclusivity of a position (i.e., only
certain groups can participate) to market a position to
potential volunteers could be counterproductive.
