A large majority of respondents (75%) said, “I am more likely to volunteer in a position that uses skills and knowledge I already have.”  Responses were consistent across demographic subgroups of age, sex, income, and educational attainment.  This does not mean, of course, that it is impossible to recruit volunteers who will need to learn entirely new sets of skills and knowledge in order to be effective.  It does mean that volunteer recruitment efforts that focus on recruiting among groups that might already have the skills and knowledge needed to be effective in the volunteer positions being marketed are more likely to net a larger group of volunteers.
