Curb-to-Curb Service - Provides service from the curb
of an origin to the curb of a destination. The driver is unable to leave their
vehicle or provide passenger assistance beyond a few feet of the entrance of a
vehicle. (Ex. public busses)
Door-to-Door
Service - Provides service from the door
of the origin to the door of the destination. The driver is able to physically
leave their vehicle and go to the door of the origin/destination to assist in
the boarding/de-boarding process if that level of service is needed. Some
providers have restrictions on the driver actually entering a person's private
residence. Some providers also restrict a driver to stay within visual range of
their vehicle. (Ex. Airport shuttles)
Hand-to-Hand - Provides service in which a driver will
not leave an individual alone. The driver picks up their passenger from the care
of one individual and drops of their passenger into the care of another
individual. This usually requires advance notice and coordination with the
transportation provider. (Ex. most community shuttles such as Senior
Services' Shuttle Program)
Hand-to-Hand is the highest level of service, while curb-to-curb
is the lowest level of service. These are increasing levels of the service
provided; so anyone offering Hand-to-Hand would also offer Door-to-Door and
Curb-to-Curb; and anyone offering Door-to-Door would also offer
Curb-to-Curb.
